Medusa

Ophic Metamorphosis series

oil on canvas, 115 cm in diameter, 2024

This powerful painting features a young, child-like Medusa, her strict eyes filled with intensity and determination. Crowning her head is a mass of snakes, each one intricately detailed and alive, symbolizing both her inner strength and the burden of her transformation. In this piece, I explore Medusa as a symbol that families in ancient Greece revered for bringing luck, highlighting the complexities of identity and the profound impact of metamorphosis in the Ophic Metamorphosis series.

Caul-born

Ophic Metamorphosis series

oil on canvas, 130 x 100 cm, 2024

This painting portrays a figure seated in a chair, their expression blank and detached, with a plastic bubble encasing their head. The bubble acts as both a shield and a barrier, symbolizing isolation and the liminal space between birth and transformation. In line with the themes of the Ophic Metamorphosis series, the piece reflects the tension between stagnation and the potential for change.

Nyx

Modern Mythology series

oil on canvas, 40 x 40 cm, 2025

This painting titled Nyx is part of my Modern Mythology series, the idea behind the series is envisioning how mythological characters and stories which are foundational to our society continue to echo and reoccur even in the present day, creating a lens through which we can examine our interactions and motivations in a new way. It also aims to unite the mythic and the ordinary to create a way of seeing the world that contains a little more magic than the world the enlightenment and rationality has foisted on us. To that end I have depicted the goddess of night as an avant-garde young woman illuminated by the harsh artificial light of the street lamp, transforming the model from a real human woman to a mythic editorial-style iconic being.

Lachesis

Modern Mythology series

oil on canvas, 50 x 50 cm, 2024

The middle sister of the three fates, Lachesis measures out the amount of life we are all given according to the necessity of our purpose on earth. By binding her with her own thread, the I attempt to defy the very idea of a fated span of life defined by obligation. Allowing the viewer to envision an escape from the bonds of fate, that they might have a chance to linger in this life and savor the richness and texture of existence.

Circe

Modern Mythology series

oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm, 2025

This painting reimagines the iconic figure of Circe from Homer's Odyssey, blending classical mythology with a modern sensibility. In this work, Circe is portrayed sitting in a retro 1970s orange plastic egg chair, a striking juxtaposition to her ancient origins. Her attire is a sleek black latex, evoking a sense of bold, contemporary femininity while maintaining an aura of mystery and power. The realistic style of the painting captures every detail of her composed yet commanding presence, emphasizing her enigmatic and magnetic qualities.

The use of the chair, an emblem of mid-century modern design, and a sort of retro futurism, the spirit of which I hoped to infuse into the painting, contrasts with the timeless nature of her mythological persona, suggesting that Circe's influence transcends both time and cultural boundaries. Her gaze, calm yet intense, reflects the feminine mystique she embodies—an ancient power that continues to captivate and intrigue. This contemporary interpretation not only invites a fresh reading of a legendary character but also celebrates the enduring force of feminine strength and mystery in both myth and modernity.
